Ever Wondered why Employees behave the way they do?

The overall goal of any Human Resource Development department is to help employees and the organisation as a whole, to achieve set objectives. This sounds pretty much straightforward, but the challenge?…creating an approach that will suit all your employees!

It important to first understand the factors that affect your employees’ behaviour (both external and internal), and then use these facts to precisely diagnose performance problems. At this point, it becomes easier to design a program that will intentionally bring about the change you want. Remember however that the success of any HRD program largely depends on whether your employees are even motivated to participate, willing to learn, and capable of applying what they have learned to improve their performance.

Be a model of hard work and good ethics!

So, before you design that HRD program, consider;

  • Employees will likely only put their efforts into tasks that they can perform successfully
  • Employees will choose behaviours that will yield positive outcomes and avoid negative outcomes
  • The presence of specific, difficult and measurable goals will push employees to higher levels of performance
  • Employees thrive on feedback! Reinforce a desired behaviour by following it with a pleasurable consequence. Decrease the frequency of undesirable behaviour by introducing a contrary consequence immediately after the behaviour.
  • Above all, be a model of hard work and good ethics!
